History

Haiti Share was conceived in July, 2007 when a group of nine young Haitian adults from Carrefour, Haiti volunteered to teach a Bible Day Camp that Dr. Betty Jean Harmsen organized during her second trip to Haiti. Later that year, she and her husband founded Haiti Share to help these young people and others like them become self-supporting and to equip them to reach out to their needy people.
Haiti Share was incorporated in Texas on January 9, 2008 and received 501(c)(3) status later that year.
The Harmsens soon began supporting some of the team members in school, funded a one-room training center with laptops and other equipment and started a leadership training program. Friends and local churches soon started providing additional funds for Haiti Share.
The team members have continued to hold an annual Bible Day Camp since that first summer. Dr. Harmsen has held an team training retreat every year since 2008 and the team has organized an annual large-scale leadership conference every year since 2009.
After the January 12, 2010 earthquake, the team started holding classes in English, computer and Bible for for neighborhood children in the back yard behind the office and they have been doing so on Saturday mornings ever since.
Shortly before the earthquake, the team leader was promoted to Director of Haitian Operations. In November 2010 four new members were added to the team.
